Closing remarks – April 2026
Forty Years of Exhibitions
When I opened a small gallery in Copenhagen in 1986, I was certain of very little, except that great art can move us closer to one another. That conviction remains.
Over four decades, Faurschou grew into a program of cross-cultural dialogue, giving room to brave works and critical voices, across spaces in Copenhagen, Beijing, Venice, and New York. This was made possible by the trust of artists, partners, and a team who carried it forward with rigor, devotion, and genuine belief.
With the closing of our New York space, I am bringing the public exhibition program to an end. To all who participated and visited, thank you.
After forty years, my direction changes. I will focus on what is essential: my family, private dealing, and working closely with artists, institutions, and collections.
With gratitude, Jens Faurschou
About
Jens Faurschou (b. 1960) is a Danish art dealer and patron recognized for his contributions to contemporary art.
In 1986, he founded Galleri Faurschou in Copenhagen, which became a leading platform for international artists. Between 1994-2005, he played a key role in introducing Danish artists to the United States by initiating DCA Gallery (Danish Contemporary Arts) in New York City together with six other galleries and the Danish Ministry of Culture. In 2007, he expanded Galleri Faurschou to China, with a gallery space in the 798 Art District in Beijing.
As a gallerist, Faurschou became known for dealing in works by celebrated artists, including Pablo Picasso and Edvard Munch. His close study of Munch led him to initiate and co-publish the artist’s Catalogue Raisonné in 2009.
After 25 years as a commercial gallery, Faurschou transitioned in 2011 to a non-commercial art program. Beyond the spaces in Beijing and Copenhagen, Faurschou also presented exhibitions in Venice. In 2019, a third space was opened in New York. The mission of Faurschou was to showcase the collection, support artists, and foster international artistic and cultural exchange, with an aspiration to let art serve as a universal language of freedom.
In 2014, Faurschou established Copenhagen Contemporary, a self-owned institution. Today, Copenhagen Contemporary is Denmark’s largest contemporary art center, transforming a once-dormant industrial area into a vibrant cultural destination with a distinguished exhibition program appreciated by both local and international visitors.
